Tabuk City, Kalinga -- City Agriculturist Gilbert Cawis Sr. said that in preparation for the El Niño, the City Government of Tabuk requested the Department of Agriculture (DA) Cordillera regional office to include Kalinga in the cloud seeding project in the region. In an interview, Cawis said that the DA-CAR has assured the City Agriculturist Office that preparations are underway for the cloud seeding and the establishment of measures to lessen the impact of drought in the region. He said that Kalinga being the rice bowl and one of the top corn producers in the region should be given prior attention in the efforts to mitigate the long drought brought about by the El Niño phenomenon to ensure that production in this part of the region will be spared. The production of artificial rain he said is vital especially for corn and rice producers who depend greatly on rain water. Meanwhile, Cawis said that the city government is likewise considering the establishment of windmill project in Tabuk City as part of its El Niño mitigating measures. This project he said was observed to be effective in several areas in pumping water to augment their limited water supply. Cawis said the city government is planning a feasibility study if determine if this will be effective in Kalinga in mitigating or even solving the scarcity of water supply especially during long drought.(ggdumallig/PIA-Kalinga) |
